Healthy
Eating for Diabetics
by Antony Worrall Thompson
Synopsis
Diabetes
and sugar are traditionally seen as mutually exclusive
and it is frequently believed that people with diabetes
have to give up their favourite foods, especially sweet
dishes, and maintain strict eating habits. The truth
is that by observing a few simple rules like basing
meals on starchy, carbohydrate foods, and eating a balanced
diet, it is possible to live with diabetes and still
enjoy good food. And by adapting recipes for cakes and
puddings you can continue to eat your favourite desserts.
This book explains how to manage your diabetes through
food and eat a balanced diet. It explains the glycaemic
index (GI) of foods and how to use it to manage your
glucose levels. And although there are a few foods (fizzy
drinks, sweets) that should be avoided, sweet foods
can still be enjoyed as long as you balance them with
low GI foods. Anthony Worall Thompson explains how to
adapt recipes so that they use less sugar and fat -
for example, using the natural sweetness of fresh or
dried fruit instead of sugar - and also offers delicious,
low-sugar recipes created specially for this book.
A
Real Winner from AWT (24 January 2005)

Fantastic
recipes. Tremendous variety of products. An abundance
of information for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Everything
I have cooked so far has been full of colour and flavour.
This is exactly what is required for food lovers who
must change their diet as a result of diabetes.
Healthy
eating For Diabetes (10 February 2004)
Reviewer: A reader
I
must say, this book is a lot better than some of the
diabetic recipe books I have seen (and I have seen
a lot in 31 years)!
There
is plenty of information introducing food facts, the
glycemic index, recipe tips and the latest research
info on diet.
There
are 100 recipes and colour photos throughout the book.
With such recipes as: scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
timbales, toasted pasta in wild mushroom broth, stuffed
sardines, and bread and butter pudding with raspberry
sauce you really cannot go wrong! Not a single recipe
resembling the likes of "Sawdust casserole"
which I have seen too many a time in diabetic recipe
publications.
This
book would make an ideal gift for anybody interested
in a healthier approach to eating, and is a lot better
than some of the so called diabetic cookbooks.
I
will definitely be making use of it. I like the way
a chef has written the recipes and as it is co-written
with a dietitian you can be assured the recipes will
be good and taste good.
Very
impressed!
Gorgeous
(3 February 2004)

This
book makes a welcome change from the usual diabetes
cookery books. The recipes are exciting but easy to
follow and the photography is beautiful. I also found
the tips and practical advice extremely useful. This
really puts the enjoyment of good food back into cooking
for those of us with diabetes.
I
don't agree with northern climes's review (2 February
2004)
Reviewer: A reader
I
have bought this book myself and I think it is a really
useful book. I have written this review because I
think that the review by northern climes is confusing
and I am worried that people with diabetes will get
the impression that this book is full of sugar and
artificial ingredients. IT IS NOT. This book concentrates
on using natural ingredients, including dried fruit,
and specifically advises against using artificial
sweetners, as is consistent with diabetes recommendations.
I
found the recipes really delicious and welcomed the
attitude that there are no 'banned' foods for people
with diabetes - sugar and sweet food is allowable
as long as you eat sensibly. And the book quite rightly
tells you how to do this. Great advice and yum yum
yummy recipes.
