Rick Stein's Guide to the Food Heroes of Britain
by Rick Stein

Rick Stein's Guide to the Food Heroes of Britain by Rick SteinSynopsis
In this companion volume to the Food Heroes cookbook, Rick Stein has compiled a directory of the best food producers, suppliers and retailers in Great Britain and Ireland. The criteria for entry are based on the quality of the produce, assessed by personal testing and experience. The book sets out to encourage readers to explore the small-scale side of food production. Divided into ten chapters by food type, the suppliers are arranged alphabetically within each chapter by region. Entries show whether suppliers offer direct sales, mail order or internet service and those using local ingredients or traditional methods.

Food Heroes You Will Love (8 October 2003)
Reviewer: A reader from Croydon, Surrey

Rick maybe revisiting some of the food heroes of Henrietta Green's book but with the significant gap of 8 - 10 years (and being hard to find in print) this is a welcome update and has many new suppliers in it. It covers everything in the series and more including speciality shops. Good details are given for any Certification the produce has i.e. organic and more importantly how to get the produce via mail/internet order. A very useful book for those who enjoy good quality food!

Sounds familiar . . . (24 September 2003)
Reviewer: A reader from Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Sorry Rick, it's already been done mate. Tour of England, sourcing small producers etc etc. I would refer you to Henrietta Green's Food Lovers' Britain albeit published some time ago. Also, her book wasn't a money-making spin off from a TV show - it was ground breaking stuff back then. If it wasn't for this lady's efforts, most of the small producers RS talks about wouldn't be here today. I'd stick with the original, folks.

Hub-UK's comment:

The last review has been included by way of impartiality but it is our opinion that Rick Stein's book is certainly worthwhile if you haven't got a copy of Henrietta Green's and when all is said and done a book published over eight years ago probably needs replacing with up to date information!
