Recipe for family meals :

Boston Brown Bread

1/2 cup sifted White flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup Whole Wheat flour
1 cup corn meal
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups thick sour milk

  • Mix and sift white flour, baking soda and salt.
  • Add whole wheat flour and corn meal.
  • Combine molasses and milk and add to first mixture.
  • Mix thoroughly, then turn into well greased moulds.
  • The cover should be greased too and then tied on wth a string, otherwise it may be forced off by the rising bread.
  • The mould should never be more than two-thirds full.
  • Steam for 3 hours.

Baking powder or cocoa tins make good moulds.
