Chilli Chutney

It is many years since Hub-UK was first launched. It has been created from recipes contributed form all over the world, from professionals and amateurs alike. A great many of the recipes do not have any details as to who sent them in or from where they came. It would be a shame not to share them with you for this reason alone.

13 lb tomatoes
1 tbsp dry mustard
1 lb celery
12 red chillies
2 x sticks cinnamon
1 qt small onions, chopped
2 lb brown sugar
3 x green peppers
1/4 cup salt
1/2 tbsp minced cloves
1 qt cider vinegar


  • Scald, then peel tomatoes.
  • Cook peeled tomatoes for 15 minutes and then drain off half juice.
  • Chop remaining vegetables and add to tomatoes. Simmer for about 90 minutes.
  • Tie spices in cloth bag. Add bag of spices and remaining ingredients to tomato mixture and continue cooking for a further 90 minutes.
  • Remove bag of spices and seal mixture in hot, sterilised jars.

Makes: 6 pints
