Pear Dessert

This recipe came from one of the recipe groups at and was submitted by Bella.

"This is a lovely, old-fashioned Swedish dessert which makes me think of Sunday dinner at my grandmother's - she often made this".


4 pears, approx 500 g (1 lb) in all
1 1/2 dl (2/3 cup) whipping cream
2 tbs sugar
1 tbs molasses
1 tsp cocoa powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla sugar
1 1/2 tbs potato starch or cornstarch
2 1/2 dl (1 cup) milk
1 dl (good 1/3 cup) flaked almonds

  • Peel, core and split the pears. Boil them until almost tender in some water - the time depends on how ripe they are.
  • Boil cream, sugar, molasses and cocoa in a small saucepan until it thickens, 5 - 8 minutes. Drain the pears well and transfer them to an oven-proof dish. Pour the sauce over the pears and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Beat together eggs, vanilla sugar, potato starch or cornstarch and milk. Pour this mixture over the pears and the sauce and sprinkle with flaked almonds. Bake in the middle of the oven at 175ºC/350ºF for about 50 minutes or until the egg mixture has set.
  • Serve lukewarm with ice cream or whipped cream.
