Recipe for :

Indian fried Chicken - Dum ki Murgi

This is one of the recipes that has been provided by Vandana who is very much a keen cook of Indian dishes. Hopefully there will be more to come!

I asked Vandana for a little background information:

"I live in Pune, India. I am a South Indian so many of my recipes are from that area. I enjoy cooking and my family and friends do say that it is appetizing! By profession I am a Relocation Consultant and the India head of an International Charity. I hope that covers the introduction".


1 medium sized chicken
2 large onions chopped fine
1 cup natural yogurt
4 green chilies
4 tbsp mint leaves
1 tbsp coriander leaves
oil for frying
salt to taste

For the paste:

3 tbsp poppy seeds
5 tbsp cashewnuts
1 1/2 tbsp chick pea flour
8 almonds
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste( use both equally to make a paste)
1 tsp cardamom powder
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 turmeric powder
salt to taste

For garnishing:
1 1/2 tbsp of chopped coriander leaves and 1 tsp chopped mint leaves

  • Prick the chicken well.
  • Grind coriander,mint leaves and chilies to a fine paste.
  • Grind the poppy seeds,almonds and cashewnuts to a fine paste.
  • Add this paste, coriander,mint and chilies paste, chick pea flour and salt to yogurt.
  • Apply it to the chicken.
  • Chill for 4 hours to marinate.
  • Heat oil and fry ginger garlic paste for 2 minutes.
  • Add chopped onions and fry till brown.
  • Add the chicken and fry till light brown.
  • Add chili powder, turmeric and salt.
  • Fry well.Add a little water and cook till done.
  • Sprinkle cardamom powder and garnish with coriander and mint leaves.
