Online: Wines of Interest
Wines
of Interest is a small, independent wine merchant in
Ipswich, Suffolk, owned and run by Jonathan Hare and
Jonathan Williamson. They have wines to suit all budgets
and tastes and Wines of Interest is the obvious place
to go for everything from your everyday tipple to something
for that special occasion. The shop has an off-licence
so you can buy as little as one bottle though there
are discounts for whole cases of most wines.
The
Jonathans concentrate on sniffing out producers who
make their wines with dedication and passion - a refreshing
change from the mass-produced monoculture of the big
brand names that frequent the supermarket shelves. They
must be doing something right since the 2003 Which?
Wine Guide included them in the Top 100 Wine Retailers
in the UK.
There
are hundreds of wines to choose from as well as fine
Ports, Sherries and specialist Spirits, nearly all of
which you cant find on the high street. Every
wine is tasted before they buy and list them, to guarantee
that each one is a good example of its type, in its
league, at its price.
The
Wines of Interest "Sampling Club" is unique
in UK wine retailing and is the perfect way to discover
their range:
Sampling
Club
Each
month, they select two wines - normally a red and a
white - which they think are interesting and good value.
they send members details of these by post at the beginning
of each month. Members then have the opportunity to
buy, during that month only, one bottle of each wine,
as a sample, at half the list price. The spirit of the
scheme anticipates that all members will, at some stage,
discover wines that they would like to re-buy. For further

Jonathan
Williamson
The
company anchor man is known as The Fat Controller.
He organises the ordering and shipping of
our wines, bonding arrangements, stock control,
accounts and lots-of-stuff-at-the-computer.
You want a spreadsheet? JW will produce
one. You dont want a spreadsheet?
JW will still produce one.
He
won the Port Scholarship in the WSET (Wine
and Spirit Education Trust) Diploma for
his year having previously gained Hotel
& Catering qualifications during his
time as a Sommelier. He now has 15 years
retail experience under his belt (and a
lot else besides). JW has a remarkable digestive
system and is a fine mimic. He does a particularly
good Richie Benaud.

Jonathan
Hare
Has
been in the East Anglian wine trade for
27 years including major stints with Lay
& Wheeler and Adnams. He does more front-of-house
stuff: shared retail duties, licenced trade
needs and much of the company copywriting.
He also passed the WSET Diploma at Scholarship
level.
JH
is paunchy, balding, bearded and laconic.
His language gets &@#*$#~ worse as he
totters uncertainly through his forties.
He feels he owes himself a mid-life crisis,
but his wife wont let him have one.

David
Ransom
Is
so much more than just a van driver: bard,
philosopher and curmudgeon extraordinaire,
he harbours fantasies of running a dictatorship
where all chewers of gum would be exterminated.
He
has written over 100 articles for The Oldie
and has his roots in accountancy, but we
dont like to talk about that. He frequently
wears a silly hat and grows excellent asparagus.
