PancakesEveryone enjoys making and devouring a few homemade pancakes once in a while, particularly if they’re topped off with your favourite sweet treat. However, most people approach pancakes in their own special way, adding a few extra ingredients here and a touch of magic there in order to produce a distinctly personal pancake.

Here we take a look at some of the main variations, themes and approaches used in pancake making and consumption. If you don’t know how to make pancakes, you may just want to find out and try your hand with some of these ideas.

When it comes to pancake toppings, the world is your oyster. Whether it is fruit, syrups, honeys, spreads, sweets, chocolate or any other thing you can think of putting on a tasty pancake, you’ll find each person has their own particular favourite. Toppings usually depend on the time of day, personal mood and what’s in the fridge but experimentation can lead to some fascinating results.

Healthy vs. Indulgent

There are many different pancake recipes floating around the internet but the best are those usually passed down through the family. Though most will end up creating tasty pancakes, there can be quite a big difference between recipes that are designed to be healthy and those that are a little more indulgent.

Most healthy recipes incorporate whole grain flour and replace any whole fat milk with an alternative but it’s up to you whether you think this is necessary.

Sweet vs. Savoury

While most people will view pancakes as a sweet treat this does not have to be the case and in a lot of places it most definitely isn’t.

Savoury pancakes are popular all over the world and often utilise meats, vegetables and a fair bit of cheese to create a different, but equally tasty, snack.

Breakfast vs. Dessert

Another widespread debate is between those that view pancakes as a dessert to be consumed after a main meal and those that consider it a breakfast food. While pancakes for breakfast are definitely more popular in America, many cafes in Europe will now offer them as an option to start the day with.
In our opinion, this debate is a little bit of a non-starter as it seems fairly obvious that pancakes can, and should, be consumed wherever and whenever people feel like it.
